Track Review - NotLewy: Never Falter

Updated: Mar 29, 2023

NotLewy has undoubtedly made a name for himself in the content creation space. His TikTok has amassed over 75 thousand followers, where he posts comedic videos, takes part in trends and shows his viewers what it is like to live with arthrogryposis: a condition that stiffens the limbs. Most recently, though, he has focused on making music, and ‘Never Falter’ is his first release of 2023. The track is heartfelt and captivating, making it arguably his best yet.

NotLewy made his debut in the music scene back in 2018, with his first single, ‘M.I.A’ featuring Teenage Disaster. This track established his brand and sound very well. There are heavy resemblances to emo-rap artists such as Lil Peep and Juice Wrld. Since this release, he has gained over 126 thousand Spotify streams.

‘Never Falter’ is NotLewy’s first release since his album ‘Orca’ in 2022. The song combines themes of love and death. Throughout the track, Lewy raps about what happens after death, stating: “A life summed up in the obituary pages, I won’t be summed up in no obituary pages.” He also goes on to say that the living will go on to live their life and “forget” about those who have passed, so it would be better to live your life how you want to with no regrets. Despite speaking on some dark themes throughout and carrying a melancholic tone, the beat is memorable, and the song has a positive message.

Although we are unsure of who the muse was for this track, Lewy says that he’d “rather be forgotten with or without you”, perhaps referring to a potential partner that people around him may not approve of. Within the sombre themes, there is also a big focus on loyalty and romance, as well as trust. Lewy insinuates that he has trouble trusting people in his life, apart from the person that the song seems to be dedicated to. He says, “you’re the one last bridge I refuse to burn”, but later says “I can’t trust a soul, not even my shadow”. This track is very personal, and serves almost as a love letter to the person he most trusts.

Combining themes of death, mistrust and love, NotLewy is making waves in the music industry with this newest track. The gritty, rhythmic beat accompanies the lyrics well, and the flow of the track is satisfying and relaxing. NotLewy is helping to keep the emo-rap scene alive, especially in his ability to be so vulnerable in his lyrics. He wears his heart on his sleeve, and allows his fans to hear his personal and vulnerable thoughts. ‘Never Falter’ proves NotLewy is a force to be reckoned with, who fans cannot wait to hear more of this year.
